The Department of Sanskrit and Pali of Punjabi University, Patiala, in collaboration with the Central Sanskrit University, New Delhi and Sanskrit Bharati Punjab, inaugurated a two-day Sanskrit seminar today. Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, Honorable Governor of Punjab and Chancellor of Punjabi University, graced the event as the Chief Guest. Prof. Shrinivas Varakhedi, Vice Chancellor of Central Sanskrit University, and Shri Jai Prakash Gautam, Sangathan Mantri of Sanskrit Bharati, attended as Guests of Honour.
Honorable Governor Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, in his address, emphasized that Punjabi University, established to preserve Punjabi language and heritage, deeply understands the importance of safeguarding cultural roots. He lauded the university’s efforts in preserving Punjabi heritage and stated that staying connected to our past strengthens our capabilities.
Highlighting Sanskrit’s significance, he said that Sanskrit shlokas are recited with reverence in most Indian households during moments of joy and sorrow. Describing Sanskrit as the language of ancient knowledge, he praised the Government of India’s initiatives to promote it.
He specially congratulated the Punjabi University for securing the 47th rank in the recent 'Outlook-ICARE Ranking 2025'. Dr. Jagdeep Singh, Vice Chancellor, Punjabi University, in his address, highlighted Punjabi university’s extensive work in the field of languages, encompassing modern languages like Hindi, French, German, and Urdu, alongside ancient languages like Pali, Persian, and Sanskrit.
He stressed that preserving local and ancient languages is vital, as their loss erases not just communication but also associated culture and knowledge. He added that language carries emotional bonds, encapsulating a region’s wisdom and heritage as well.
Prof. Shrinivas Varakhedi described Sanskrit as India’s identity, advocating its use in daily conversation alongside academic study. Shri Jai Prakash Gautam emphasized that preserving Sanskrit ensures the safety of other Indian languages, calling for grassroots efforts to promote it.
He cited data on Sanskrit education in colleges across Punjab and India. Dr. Varinder Kumar, Head, Department of Sanskrit and Pali, in his welcome address, outlined the seminar’s objectives and the department’s various activities.
