The Governor of Punjab and Administrator, U.T. Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria today attended the World Music Day 2026 celebrations as a Cheif Guest held at Tagore Theatre, Chandigarh, under “Fusion Fest 2026”, organized by the Department of Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh Administration. The event, attended by Secretary Cultural Affairs Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah, celebrated the extraordinary talent, creativity and determination of specially-abled artists and children through music, dance, and visual arts.

In a significant announcement, Shri Kataria declared cash awards of ₹5 lakh for specially-abled artists, a first-of-its-kind initiative to encourage and recognize their artistic achievements and contribution to society. Addressing the gathering, the Administrator said that music is a universal language that transcends barriers and has the power to unite people, inspire confidence and create positive social change.

He emphasized that the abilities, determination and accomplishments of specially-abled artists serve as a source of inspiration for society and demonstrate that talent knows no physical limitations. The event showcased remarkable performances by specially-abled children and artists.

A major attraction was the performance by “We Are One (WAO)”, India’s first professional wheelchair dance group, which captivated the audience with its message of resilience, confidence and inclusivity. Students of Vatika Special School for Hearing-Impaired Children presented an energetic Bhangra performance, displaying exceptional enthusiasm and talent.

A painting exhibition featuring artworks created by specially-abled children was also organized by the Chandigarh Lalit Kala Akademi, providing a platform for young artists to express their creativity and imagination. Shri Kataria appreciated the efforts of the Department of Cultural Affairs for promoting inclusivity through cultural programmes and creating opportunities for specially-abled individuals to showcase their abilities.

He observed that music, art, theatre and sports are powerful tools for empowerment and can play a vital role in building self-confidence, social integration and a positive outlook among youth. Linking the event with the vision of “Nasha Mukt Bharat”, the Administrator said that constructive engagement in cultural and creative activities offers meaningful alternatives for young people and helps channel their energies towards nation-building and personal development.

He called upon artists, educators, institutions and citizens to work collectively towards creating a healthy, inclusive and drug-free society. Also present on the occasion was Director, Cultural Affairs, Chandigarh Administration, Shri Naveen, DANICS.

The programme witnessed enthusiastic participation from specially-abled artists, students, representatives of cultural organizations and members of the public.
