Punjab Governor and Administrator, UT Chandigarh, Shri Gulab Chand Kataria, today held an interactive session with members of the Senior Journalists Forum, Chandigarh, at Punjab Lok Bhavan, Chandigarh. Welcoming the members of the Forum, the Governor said that journalism has played a vital role in strengthening democracy and shaping public opinion.

He emphasized that the power of the pen, coupled with truthfulness, honesty, and objective analysis, has earned journalists immense respect and recognition in society. Shri Kataria observed that many of the issues debated in Parliament and State Legislatures have historically originated from reports and investigations carried out by journalists.

He described the media as an essential pillar of democracy and appreciated the role of journalists in bringing public concerns to the attention of governments and policymakers. The Governor said that it is the duty of journalists to highlight shortcomings in the system so that corrective measures can be taken in the larger public interest.

He noted that constructive criticism and fearless reporting help governments and administrations improve their functioning and enhance public welfare. Stressing the importance of self-improvement, Shri Kataria remarked, “One should never hide one’s shortcomings; rather, efforts should be made to learn from them and continuously improve.”

He further stated that journalists serve as valuable guides for governments and administrations by drawing attention to areas requiring improvement. Their insights and observations contribute significantly to transparent, accountable, and people-centric governance.

Appreciating the initiative of the Senior Journalists Forum, the Governor said that bringing senior journalists together on a common platform is a commendable achievement. He also highlighted the challenges faced by many journalists after retirement and emphasized the need for such forums to provide support, mutual assistance, and opportunities for continued engagement.

On the occasion, Mr. A.S. Prashar, Chairman of the Senior Journalists Forum, thanked Punjab Lok Bhavan for providing a platform for the interaction. Mr. Jagtar Singh Sidhu, President of the Forum, welcomed the Governor and briefed him about the objectives and activities of the organization.

The interaction witnessed a meaningful exchange of views on the role of media in a democratic society and the welfare of journalists.
