Under the aegis of the District Red Cross Society, SAS Nagar, a Tuck Shop-cum-Canteen aimed at providing employment opportunities to youngsters suffered with the Autism Spectrum was inaugurated today at Government Polytechnic College, Khoonimajra. Formally inaugurating the canteen, Deputy Commissioner-cum-Chairperson of District Red Cross Society, SAS Nagar, Mrs. Komal Mittal said that the canteen, named “Wings,” will pave the way for special youth who are capable of achieving much more despite life’s challenges. 

She emphasized that regular interaction with students, teachers, and visitors will help society recognize the immense potential of these youngsters and support them in becoming financially self-reliant. Highlighting their achievements, the Deputy Commissioner shared that Harman Sharma and Nimit Dogra have passed their 10+2 examinations from the Open School Board. 

Both have also represented at the national level in athletics and cycling, winning gold medals to their credit. Describing the initiative as a pilot project, she stated that similar employment-oriented ventures will soon be extended to other educational institutions to create more opportunities for intellectually gifted special youth.

Mrs. Mittal further said that daily interaction with society will help the youngsters gain practical life experience and build confidence. A female staff member, Sukhjinder Kaur, has been deputed to assist the two youths, aged 19 and 22, to ensure smooth functioning of the canteen. 

The District Red Cross Society, SAS Nagar, will provide all necessary stock for the canteen, and the youngsters will be given attractive incentives for their work. Additional Deputy Commissioner (G) Geetika Singh, AC (G) Dr. Ankita Singh, SDM Kharar Gurmeet Singh, Secretary Red Cross Harbans Singh, Principal Raksha Kiran, and Prof. Gurbakshish Singh Antal were also present on the occasion.

To mark the event, the Deputy Commissioner also planted saplings in the canteen premises, making the occasion memorable.
