The Social Welfare Department today observed National Senior Citizen day here at Day Care and Recreation Centre, Roop Nagar, Jammu.The programme witnessed a series of activities including a medical checkup camp with distribution of Ayush medicine kits and a yoga session hosted by the Department of Indian System of Medicines (AYUSH).

On the occasion, a huge number of Senior Citizens from across the District participated in the Programme/activities which were held during the event.The District Social Welfare Officer, Mamta Rajput sensitized the youth about the need for care of the elderly persons including their parents, grandparents and old age people in general by engaging them in different acts of kindness. 

She prominently advised them to spend quality time with the elderly persons to give them company and learn from their experiences.The DSWO also advised the senior citizens to engage in social as well as physical activities besides taking good care of their physical as well as mental health.  

During the interaction session, the Medical Officer of Ayush and Yoga instructors provided information and guidance to participants regarding their health care and stress management. The representative from Elderline also interacted with the senior citizens and discussed in detail different services provided to the senior citizens through the help line number 14567.  

Later, a cultural programme was also presented by senior citizens to entertain the participants. Sports Events such as badminton, Chess, Carrom were also held in the premises of Day Care and Recreation Centre Jammu where many prominent senior citizens from across the district participated in the event.

The Senior citizens hailed the Social Welfare Department for taking new and innovative measures like establishing a Day care centre, elderline, initiative of establishing Old age homes, grant in aid to Old age homes run by various NGOs, saturation of financial assistance in the form of old age pension to senior citizens etc.

A similar program was held at Panj Mandir, Trikuta Nagar Jammu by the Social Welfare Department, in collaboration with Association for Welfare of Senior Citizens, Elderline, Department of Ayush and Department of Information and Public Relations. 

A large number of senior citizens attended the programme which witnessed a Yoga session and free medical camp, besides a cultural event  and interactive sessions.
