The Punjab government has envisaged a major initiative for skill development of one lac youth every year to meet the demand skilled man power of existing and upcoming industry.Madan Mohan Mittal Technical Education Minister today said that the Department of Technical Education and Industrial Training, Government of Punjab has taken landmark steps to bolster vocational training and skill development, so that the students belonging to the state do not lag behind in terms of acquiring latest skills.He said that the Department said that technical education quality improvement programme has been made operational at the cost of Rs.83.90 crores in 8 engineering colleges to improve the standard of education and learning processes.

He informed that in partnership with Toyota Motors Ltd, body and paint shops have been established at ITI Ludhiana and ITI Lalru. The results of this unique venture have been excellent with the placement record of students passing out being cent per cent. Not only this, but 2 multi disciplinary academies have been established and also 5 institutes christened as Punjab Institute of Technology have been set up at Mansa, Hoshiarpur, Khunimajra, Batala and Kapurthala, with this initiative costing state exchequer Rs. 91.77 crores.He further informed that 2 community colleges have been set up at Jalandhar and Bathinda as a consequence of partnership between hackney community college London , and Jalandhar. He said that  an online admission system for ITI’s has been put in place and also a web portalwww.punjabiti.gov.in has been launched.

He further informed that 5 new ITI’s are being set up at adampur in Jalandhar, Maloud in Ludhiana,  Niari in Gurdaspur, Manakpur Sharif in Mohali and Singhpura in Rupnagar. Regarding giving free training to SC and OBC students in ITI’s and post matric scholarship scheme, he clarified that in the year 2014-15, 14241 students will be among the beneficiaries and during the same session approx. 75000 students will be provided technical education in polytechnics and engineering colleges free of cost.He informed that the central government is also chipping in with  a regional vocational training institute for girls and regional directorate of apprenticeship training being set up in Mohali with its assistance.
