Mittal Orders To Set Up Anti Ragging Helplines In All Technical Institutes

Ragging Would Invite Expulsion As Well As Registration Of Criminal Case Against Guilty

Madan Mohan Mittal, Technical Education and Industrial Training Minister, Punjab today issued instructions to all the government and private technical education an institute including Engineering Colleges, Polytechnics and ITI’s to set up anti ragging helplines within 15 days to ensure that students being admitted by them in fresh batches were not subjected to any harassment and ragging by the seniors. Terming the ragging as peril to education system, Mr. Mittal has said that if any student found indulging in ragging, he/she would be immediately sacked from institutes besides registration of criminal case against the guilty. He also asked Principal Secretary of the department to establish helpline at headquarter where students may lodge their complaint if they were not satisfied with the redressal of their grievances at concerned institution level. He also asked department to depute senior officials to randomly check the status and disposal of complaints.

To make the parents partner in this drive, the Minister has also ordered the educational institutions to take written undertaking from the students and their parents mentioning that they would not take part in any kind of ragging activity. He said that parents should be made aware of the condition that involvement of their wards in any form of ragging would invite expulsion from the Institute as well as registration of criminal case.Mr. Mittal has also asked the Punjab Technical University, other deemed universities, Technical Educational Institutions, Polytechnics and ITI's to follow the Supreme Court guidelines in this regard to  safeguard the interests of freshers.
