Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Tuesday reaffirmed Meghalaya's commitment to building a world-class sporting ecosystem and empowering youth through sports, while addressing the Meghalaya Sports Conclave 2026 in Shillong.
Speaking before an audience comprising sports administrators, athletes, policymakers and industry experts, the Chief Minister underlined that the Government's investment in sports extends far beyond the pursuit of medals and sporting success.
He described sports as a powerful instrument for youth development, social transformation and long-term state-building. “It is not just about one medal, one appointment letter, or one stadium. It is about the youth and the opportunity we create for them,” Sangma said while outlining the broader vision behind Meghalaya's ambitious sports development initiatives.
He highlighted the remarkable progress the State has achieved over the last few years, noting that Meghalaya has emerged as one of the country's most dynamic destinations for sports infrastructure development. Nearly 240 sports infrastructure projects have either been completed, are under implementation, or are currently under construction across the State.
This number is expected to exceed 500 projects by 2028, reflecting the Government's sustained commitment to creating modern sporting facilities at all levels. The Chief Minister stressed that the preparations for hosting the 39th National Games in 2027 should not be viewed as a short-term objective.
Instead, he described the National Games as an important milestone in Meghalaya's broader journey to create a lasting sporting culture and a robust ecosystem that nurtures talent for generations to come. Sangma also pointed to what he described as the State's most significant achievement, a transformation in mindset.
He said Meghalaya has developed the confidence to dream bigger, host major national events and compete with the best in the country. This change, he noted, has encouraged greater public participation, stronger institutional support and increased aspirations among young athletes.
Referring to the construction of what will be the country's largest football stadium, the Chief Minister said the project symbolises Meghalaya's growing ambition and determination to establish itself as a major sporting hub. At the same time, he acknowledged that there is still much work ahead but expressed confidence that the State is moving steadily in the right direction.
The Chief Minister's address also highlighted the extensive talent development initiatives undertaken by the Government. More than 50,000 athletes have been identified through scouting programmes since June 2025, while over 1,200 athletes are currently undergoing structured training.
The State has earmarked Rs 72.5 crore for Team Meghalaya's preparations for the National Games, demonstrating its commitment to athlete development and competitive excellence. Concluding his address, Sangma reiterated that the true legacy of Meghalaya's sports movement will be measured not only by sporting achievements but also by the opportunities created for young people, the confidence instilled in communities, and the sustainable ecosystem built for future generations.
