Ahead of Diwali, all the Food Safety teams in the State are on toes to ensure quality sweets to the people, informed KS Pannu, Commissioner Food and Drug Administration Punjab. He said that intensive sampling with over a hundred samples a day is underway coupled with sensitizing the Food Business Operators (FBOs) on maintaining good manufacturing and hygiene practices. He said that special emphasis is being laid on the quality and quantity of the permissible food grade colours that may be used for the preparation of sweets. The halwais have been clearly instructed to avoid synthetic colours in the manufacturing of sweets and to maintain proper hygiene during bulk preparation in their premises. They have also been asked to either self-manufacture khoya for their requirement or buy it from trusted sources with proper bills/invoices, said Pannu. In wake of festive season, apprehending inter-district and inter-state transit of sub standard sweets, paneer and khoya, special naakas (check-points) have been set up with food safety teams making random checks round the clock, he informed.
