Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda on Friday participated in a tree plantation programme in Meghalaya's capital, Shillong, as part of the party's nationwide drive on World Environment Day, reaffirming the Centre's commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.

The plantation drive was organised at the Shillong Golf Club under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "One Tree One Mother" campaign, an initiative that encourages citizens to plant a tree in honour of their mothers while contributing to the protection of the environment.

Addressing party workers and participants, Nadda said the campaign symbolises the deep connection between motherhood and nature, both of which nurture and sustain life. He noted that the initiative, launched in 2024, has evolved into a mass movement with lakhs of BJP workers and supporters participating in plantation drives across the country.

"The campaign draws inspiration from the selfless love and care of mothers. Just as a mother nurtures and protects her child, nature sustains all forms of life. Planting a tree in honour of one's mother is both a tribute to her and a commitment to preserving the environment," Nadda said.

He highlighted the importance of increasing green cover and promoting environmental awareness at a time when climate change and ecological degradation pose significant global challenges. He also called upon citizens, particularly the youth, to actively participate in conservation efforts and adopt environmentally responsible practices.

Senior BJP leader and MLA A.L. Hek, who accompanied Nadda during the programme, underscored the need for collective action to safeguard natural resources. He said afforestation and environmental protection should remain a shared responsibility of governments, communities and individuals.

Hek stressed that preserving forests, water bodies, and biodiversity is essential for maintaining ecological balance and ensuring a sustainable future for the coming generations. He urged people to actively contribute to plantation drives and support initiatives aimed at protecting the environment.

The event formed part of a series of programmes organised by the BJP across the country on World Environment Day, with party leaders and workers undertaking plantation activities and spreading awareness about environmental conservation.
