With Matka King now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, actress Kritika Kamra is drawing widespread attention for her striking on-screen transformation. Her character’s look rooted deeply in the aesthetic of the 1970s, has emerged as one of the most talked-about elements of the series, earning her the tag of the ‘Matka Queen’.

Kritika’s appearance as 'Gulrukh' in the show is a carefully crafted homage to the timeless glamour of iconic actresses like Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Sharmila Tagore and Rekha. From bold polka dot dresses to elegant Parsi sarees, each outfit in Matka King reflects a deep understanding of the era’s fashion sensibilities.

What stands out is how every look feels authentic yet cinematic, bringing back vivid memories of the 70s while seamlessly blending into the narrative. The styling goes beyond just costumes. The hair, makeup, and accessories have been meticulously designed to mirror the effortless charm and individuality that defined that decade.

Whether it’s statement hairdos, retro prints, or vintage silhouettes, Kritika’s look throughout the series captures the spirit of the time, making it visually immersive for audiences. Sharing her experience, Kritika said, “The team spent a lot of time understanding the look and feel of the era and my character Gulrukh particularly.

It started with a photo of Parveen Babi that Nagraj sir had shared and then we looked at the legendary Zeenat Aman, Sharmila Tagore, Rekha for inspiration. Our costume designer, Priyanka Dubey did multiple trials with me.

Everything from the hair to shoes and accessories was discussed and sourced with great care. Not just the iconic actresses of the time, we also saw real photos of jazz clubs, races and Parsi events that have been documented.

The costume, hair and makeup have been a big part of who this character is and helped me greatly in finding the poise that Gulrukh needed.”
