The 2-acre pond in village Ghanour Kalan, located in the Dhuri Assembly Constituency represented by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, will no longer be a source of nuisance or an eyesore for the village. Instead, it will now irrigate 170 acres (approximately 68 hectares) of agricultural land. The pipeline installation under this significant project was inaugurated by Punjab State Industrial Development Corporation Chairman Dalvir Singh Dhillon. On this occasion, Mandi Board Chairman Rajwant Singh Ghuli was also present.
Sharing details about the project, Chairman Dalvir Singh Dhillon said the village faced a major issue with stagnant wastewater. When this problem was brought to the attention of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, he immediately directed the Department of Soil and Water Conservation to resolve it.
He further explained that under the department’s project, water from the pond will be transported to the farmers' fields through an underground pipeline of approximately 2 km. The joint project of the Punjab Government and NABARD will cost ₹21.25 lakh. He added that this initiative will be replicated in every village across Punjab.
Village Sarpanch Jaswinder Singh and all Panchayat members present unanimously stated that the overflow issue will now be resolved. Earlier, this water used to flood the village streets, causing foul smells and seasonal diseases, especially during the rainy season. The reclaimed water will now be used for irrigating both wheat and paddy crops. Farmers will no longer need to rely on motor pumps.
Keshav Kumar, Divisional Soil Conservation Officer, Sangrur, informed that a 7.5 HP solar pump will be used to transport the pond water to the fields. The cost of the solar pump and motor will be borne by the department, and no fees will be charged to the farmers for the irrigation water.
Other notable attendees included Chairman Rajwant Singh, Block President Sukhdev Singh, Sarpanch Amritpal Singh of Ghanouri Kalan, Sub-Divisional Soil Conservation Officer Jaspal Singh (Sangrur), Soil Conservation Officer Sukhjeevan Singh (Dhuri), and Surveyors Arif, Pawan Kumar, and Deepak Kumar.
