Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla, under the aegis of Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice Chancellor, HPNLU, Shimla, celebrated International Human Rights Day with an enriching special lecture organized by its Centre for Human Rights and Disability Studies. The lecture, delivered in hybrid mode, was themed on “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now in Reference to Vulnerable People,” and focused on advancing the dialogue around human dignity, diversity, and justice.

Prof. (Dr.) Priti Saxena, Vice-Chancellor of HPNLU Shimla, delivered the Inaugural Address, elaborating on the defensive and protective roles in upholding human rights. She stressed the importance of dignity, respect, and proactive measures to prevent abuses. Prof. Saxena also reflected on the complexities of human identity in a politically constructed world, emphasizing the need for robust prevention and protection mechanisms to safeguard rights.

The keynote address was delivered by the Chief Guest, Prof. (Dr.) Manoj Kumar Sinha, Vice-Chancellor of DNLU Jabalpur. Prof. Sinha addressed the challenges faced by marginalized communities, asserting that access to basic necessities, including clothing, is a fundamental human right. He delved into the drafting of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), highlighting the contributions of Eleanor Roosevelt and Hansa Mehta.

Prof. Sinha analyzed key provisions of the United Nations Charter of 1945, connecting them with Articles 14, 20, and 21 of the Indian Constitution. Emphasizing the state's primary responsibility in protecting human rights, he called for timely interventions to address systematic violations. Prof. Sinha concluded his lecture with a profound reflection on the need for collaborative efforts to uphold human dignity and rights.

The program concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. (Dr.) S.S. Jaswal, Registrar, HPNLU Shimla.
