The Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) for traffic and road safety, Amardeep Singh Rai, announced on Tuesday that the Punjab police will establish special sobriety checkpoints on national and state highways to address drunken driving, a leading cause of road accidents. Following a meeting with traffic SPs, DSPs, and other officials, ADGP Rai mentioned that the Punjab police have ordered 800 new alcometers, which will be distributed across the districts.
He emphasized that drunken driving is a major factor in road accidents, and the Punjab police will take strict action against individuals found driving under the influence of alcohol. ADGP Rai also disclosed that on the directions of DGP Gaurav Yadav, 27 hi-tech interceptor vehicles are also being procured by the Punjab police to tackle over-speeding and reckless driving.
He also addressed the issue of road accidents caused by stray cattle, stating that approximately 350 deaths are reported annually due to this problem. Various departments are actively working to resolve this issue, including the Municipal Corporations, animal husbandry, and others.
Additionally, 900 e-challan machines have been provided to the districts under the recently launched system in Punjab. These measures are expected to further reduce the number of road accidents in Punjab.
ADGP Rai highlighted the positive impact of deploying the Sadak Surakhya Force (SSF), a brainchild of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, which has resulted in a 15-20 percent decrease in road accident fatalities. On underage driving, the traffic wing of the district police will collaborate with school managements to educate students on legal provisions related to underage driving in the first phase. Strict action will be taken against underage drivers and their parents to address this issue in next phase.

ਵਧੀਕ ਡਾਇਰੈਕਟਰ ਜਨਰਲ ਆਫ ਪੁਲਿਸ (ਏ.ਡੀ.ਜੀ.ਪੀ.) ਟਰੈਫਿਕ ਅਤੇ ਸੜਕ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਅਮਰਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਰਾਏ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਐਲਾਨ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸੜਕੀ ਹਾਦਸਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਮੁੱਖ ਕਾਰਨ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਵਾਹਨ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਨੱਥ ਪਾਉਣ ਲਈ ਰਾਸ਼ਟਰੀ ਅਤੇ ਰਾਜ ਮਾਰਗਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਵਿਸ਼ੇਸ਼ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਨਾਕੇ ਸਥਾਪਤ ਕਰੇਗੀ। ਟ੍ਰੈਫਿਕ ਐਸ.ਪੀਜ਼, ਡੀ.ਐਸ.ਪੀਜ਼ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਅਧਿਕਾਰੀਆਂ ਨਾਲ ਮੀਟਿੰਗ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ, ਏ.ਡੀ.ਜੀ.ਪੀ. ਰਾਏ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ 800 ਨਵੇਂ ਐਲਕੋਮੀਟਰ ਆਰਡਰ ਕੀਤੇ ਹਨ, ਜੋ ਕਿ ਸਾਰੇ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੰਡੇ ਜਾਣਗੇ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਜ਼ੋਰ ਦੇ ਕੇ ਕਿਹਾ ਕਿ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਗੱਡੀ ਚਲਾਉਣਾ ਸੜਕ ਹਾਦਸਿਆਂ ਦਾ ਇੱਕ ਵੱਡਾ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਸ਼ਰਾਬ ਪੀ ਕੇ ਗੱਡੀ ਚਲਾਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਵਿਅਕਤੀਆਂ ਖ਼ਿਲਾਫ਼ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕਰੇਗੀ। ਏ.ਡੀ.ਜੀ.ਪੀ. ਰਾਏ ਨੇ ਇਹ ਵੀ ਖੁਲਾਸਾ ਕੀਤਾ ਕਿ ਡੀ.ਜੀ.ਪੀ. ਗੌਰਵ ਯਾਦਵ ਦੇ ਨਿਰਦੇਸ਼ਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਵੱਲੋਂ ਤੇਜ਼ ਰ\ਤਾਰ ਅਤੇ ਲਾਪਰਵਾਹੀ ਵਰਤਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਚਾਲਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਨਜਿੱਠਣ ਲਈ 27 ਹਾਈਟੈਕ ਇੰਟਰਸੈਪਟਰ ਵਾਹਨ ਵੀ ਖਰੀਦੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਅਵਾਰਾ ਪਸ਼ੂਆਂ ਕਾਰਨ ਹੋਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਸੜਕ ਹਾਦਸਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਵੀ ਸੰਬੋਧਿਤ ਕਰਦੇ ਹੋਏ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਇਸ ਸਮੱਸਿਆ ਕਾਰਨ ਹਰ ਸਾਲ ਲਗਭਗ 350 ਮੌਤਾਂ ਹੁੰਦੀਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਸ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਵੱਖ-ਵੱਖ ਵਿਭਾਗ ਸਰਗਰਮੀ ਨਾਲ ਕੰਮ ਕਰ ਰਹੇ ਹਨ, ਜਿਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਨਗਰ ਨਿਗਮ, ਪਸ਼ੂ ਪਾਲਣ ਅਤੇ ਹੋਰ ਸ਼ਾਮਲ ਹਨ।
ਇਸ ਤੋਂ ਇਲਾਵਾ, ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਹਾਲ ਹੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤੀ ਗਈ ਪ੍ਰਣਾਲੀ ਤਹਿਤ ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਨੂੰ 900 ਈ-ਚਲਾਨ ਮਸ਼ੀਨਾਂ ਮੁਹੱਈਆ ਕਰਵਾਈਆਂ ਗਈਆਂ ਹਨ। ਇਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਉਪਰਾਲਿਆਂ ਸਦਕਾ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਵਿੱਚ ਸੜਕ ਹਾਦਸਿਆਂ ਦੀ ਗਿਣਤੀ ਵਿੱਚ ਹੋਰ ਕਮੀ ਆਉਣ ਦੀ ਉਮੀਦ ਹੈ। ਏ.ਡੀ.ਜੀ.ਪੀ. ਰਾਏ ਨੇ ਮੁੱਖ ਮੰਤਰੀ ਭਗਵੰਤ ਸਿੰਘ ਮਾਨ ਦੀ ਦਿਮਾਗੀ ਕਾਢ ਸੜਕ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਆ ਫੋਰਸ (ਐਸ.ਐਸ.ਐਫ.) ਦੀ ਤਾਇਨਾਤੀ ਦੇ ਸਕਾਰਾਤਮਕ ਪ੍ਰਭਾਵ 'ਤੇ ਚਾਨਣਾ ਪਾਇਆ, ਜਿਸ ਦੇ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਵਜੋਂ ਸੜਕ ਹਾਦਸਿਆਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਮੌਤਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ 15-20 ਫੀਸਦ ਕਮੀ ਆਈ ਹੈ।
ਘੱਟ ਉਮਰ ਦੀ ਡਰਾਈਵਿੰਗ 'ਤੇ, ਜ਼ਿਲ੍ਹਾ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦਾ ਟ੍ਰੈਫਿਕ ਵਿੰਗ ਪਹਿਲੇ ਪੜਾਅ ਵਿੱਚ ਕਾਨੂੰਨੀ ਵਿਵਸਥਾਵਾਂ ਬਾਰੇ ਵਿਦਿਆਰਥੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਜਾਗਰੂਕ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਸਕੂਲ ਪ੍ਰਬੰਧਕਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਸਹਿਯੋਗ ਕਰੇਗਾ। ਅਗਲੇ ਪੜਾਅ ਵਿੱਚ ਇਸ ਮੁੱਦੇ ਨੂੰ ਹੱਲ ਕਰਨ ਲਈ ਨਾਬਾਲਗ ਡਰਾਈਵਰਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਮਾਪਿਆਂ ਵਿਰੁੱਧ ਸਖ਼ਤ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ ਕੀਤੀ ਜਾਵੇਗੀ।
