In a significant operation, Punjab Police, in collaboration with the Border Security Force (BSF), thwarted a major drug smuggling attempt by Pakistan-based smugglers. The joint operation resulted in the discovery of three packets of heroin weighing a total of 3 kg.

The smugglers had used a quadcopter drone to drop the consignment. This operation took place near the Pond of village Bhaini Rajputan in Gharinda, Amritsar. This incident marked the seventh instance of a drone being used for cross-border drug smuggling that was successfully intercepted by Punjab Police and BSF in less than a week.

The collective efforts of these security agencies led to the seizure of a total of 14.5 kg of heroin.Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav announced the latest operation's success, underscoring the vigilance and swift action of law enforcement agencies. He revealed that the joint operation was initiated based on credible intelligence about an impending attempt to smuggle heroin into the region using a drone.

During the intensive search operation, a dismantled drone and three concealed packets of heroin were recovered near the pond in village Bhaini Rajputan in Gharinda. The investigation is ongoing to identify the smugglers from Pakistan who orchestrated the drone delivery, as well as their Indian counterparts who were expected to receive the air-dropped heroin consignment.

In response to this incident, a case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, specifically under sections 21 and 61, along with sections 10, 11, and 12 of the Aircraft Act. The case, registered as FIR No. 224 dated 01.11.2023, is currently under the jurisdiction of the Gharinda Police Station in Amritsar.

The interception of these drug smuggling attempts represents a significant victory in the ongoing battle against drug-related issues and cross-border smuggling activities in the region. Punjab Police and the BSF continue their vigilance and dedicated efforts to maintain the security and integrity of the state.
