A series of activities were organised by the Department of Biotechnology, CCT-CGC Landran in association with Ivy Hospital Mohali to mark ‘World Heart Day’. Commemorating this year’s theme of ‘Use Heart, Know Heart’, the department convened an expert lecture by Dr. Virender Sarwal, Director, Cardiac Surgery, Ivy Hospital, Mohali in addition to a free health check-up camp, door-to-door healthy heart awareness campaign at village Saneta and a healthy heart awareness rally. The health check-up camp was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Balvin Kaur Ghai and Dr. Diksha from Ivy Hospital. Department level technical events such as poster making competitions, oral presentations, creative writing and fitness workshops saw enthusiastic participation by CGC students. World Heart Day was instituted in partnership with the World Health Organisation (WHO) in the year 2000, to raise awareness and mobilize international action against cardiovascular disease.

Delivering his remarks during the expert lecture Dr. Sarwal highlighted the importance of taking care of one’s heart health by eating healthy, exercising regularly and managing stress by spending time with family, friends and sharing one’s thoughts or anxieties with them. He urged the audience to stay away from smoking, leading sedentary lifestyle, consuming excessive junk food and high fat diets which can make people more prone to the risk of cardiovascular ailments.

He shared useful tips to maintain a healthy heart which include doing Yoga and exercising, incorporating fruits, vegetables and nuts in one’s daily diet and regular health checkups from early on.

The event concluded with the Dr. P.N. Hrisheekesha, Campus Director, CGC Landran honouring Dr. Sarwal, and the felicitation ceremony of the winners of various department-level competitions. These students were conferred with trophies and certificates.
