The 17th Annual Athletic Meet 2023 of Chandigarh Group of Colleges (CGC) Landran was declared open today. The inaugural ceremony was graced by the presence of Chief Guest - renowned weightlifter Sathish Sivalingam, Arjuna Awardee and Commonwealth games’ gold medallist and the Guest of Honour Satender Dagar, Indian wrestler WWE.

More than five hundred students from CGC participated in the event. CGC students who had won medals in PTU Level Championships were also felicitated at the event with Certificates of Appreciation and cash prizes.

The Athletic meet commenced with a well synchronised and enthusiastic march past by CGC’s NCC Cadets followed by all the participating sportspersons of CGC Landran. The Chief Guest inspected the parade and post hoisting of the national flag, he declared the athletic meet open. 

Addressing the athletes, Sathish Sivalingam recounted his journey to becoming one of India’s top weightlifters. Highlighting the struggle, the hours of training, consistent hard work, discipline and his parents’ support, all of which helped him attain top milestones including two gold medals in commonwealth games, he motivated the students to believe in themselves, never get scared of challenges or criticism and to never give up which will help them overcome any hurdle in their sprint towards their goals. 

President Rashpal Singh Dhaliwal lauded CGC students for their enthusiastic response and participation in the sports meet. He asked the students to dedicate at least two hours of their time, daily, to sports and physical activities in addition to eating healthy which will help them become fitter, healthier and happier. 

The first day of the event saw the athletes participating in 100 mts, 200 mts, 400 mts, 800 mts and 1500 mts races, Discus Throw, Shot Put, Javelin Throw, Triple Jump, High Jump and Long Jump. 

The results till the filing of this report are as follows:

Akhilesh Yadav was the winner of the 1500 mts race, Gaurav, stood second while Kundan came third. In the Discus Throw event (girls), Diljot captured the first position while Ramadeep stood second; Dinita took the third spot. In Shot Put (Boys) – Akshat was declared the winner; Rajeev came second while Chinmai stood third. In Long Jump (Girls) Tania stood first; Priya captured the second position while Sathvi came third. In High Jump (Boys), Ansh stood first, Abhishek, second while Harshit stood third.
