World environment day was today celebrated with verve here in the district wherein a series of activities were held to mark the day. Deputy Commissioner, Babila Rakhwal flagged off Marathon from Mini Secretariat to Sulla Park and launched cleanliness drives at different places. ADDC Jyoti Salathia among other district and sectoral officers participated in the drive. 

Speaking at the event, the DC said that the day is celebrated to raise awareness on issues like air pollution, plastic pollution, noise pollution, global warming and consequently degradation of environment. She called for making collective efforts to minimise degradation of planet blue and to save and protect it for sustainable existence. The DC urged the public to take up tree plantation drives, to use leftover stalks as fodder, to cut down on use of plastic goods. 

She appealed the public to segregate their domestic waste. DDC Katra, Nirmala Devi, Sarpanch Aghar Jitto, Prem Lata, PRI members, various district officers, members of Self Help Groups and prominent citizens also celebrated World Environment Day by flagging of dedicated vehicle for collecting Solid waste resource for segregation from Panchayat Aghar Jitto as part of Pilot project for Solid Waste Management under Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (Gramin) on the day. Plantation drive was also conducted in the premises.
