Every year on June 7th, World Food Safety Day is celebrated. It has been marked to raise awareness and organise action to avoid, identify, and manage foodborne risks as well as to promote human health. On March 7, 2022, the World Health Organisation (WHO) announced the topic for this year's World Food Safety Day, "Safer food, greater health," and since then, people have kicked off a campaign to encourage global involvement.

One of the most important determinants of good health is the availability of safe food. Unsafe diets cause a variety of diseases and contribute to a variety of other health problems, including stunted growth and development, micronutrient deficiencies, non-communicable, communicable diseases, and mental illness. Foodborne diseases impact one out of every ten people worldwide each year.

History Of World Food Safety Day

On December 20, 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared World Food Safety Day to honour the benefits of safe food. The World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) collaborate to make the day a success.

Significance Of World Food Safety Day

According to the United Nations, around 600 million cases of foodborne disease are reported each year, making contaminated food one of the most serious risks to human health. Diseases caused by unsanitary food disproportionately impact the most vulnerable and marginalised members of society, including children, women, and conflict victims.

Parasites, viruses, and bacteria present in contaminated food and water cause these disorders, which are typically invisible to the naked eye. Food safety is crucial to ensuring that food is safe and sanitary at all stages of the food supply chain. Before it reaches the customer, food must be safe from harvesting to processing through storage and delivery.

Purpose of World Food Safety Day

The purpose of celebrating World Food Safety Day on the 7th of June every year is for people to be aware of nutritious food and any dangerous chemicals and adulterants in food items. Not only this, but on this day, the human body is also told about the importance of eating nutritious foods. Keeping all these things in mind, you must have understood the purpose of 'World Food Safety Day'. It is celebrated just with the aim of spreading awareness about healthy eating.

Hence, World Food Safety Day strives to reform food systems in order to provide better health and prevent foodborne infections in the long run. This day also presents an opportunity to bolster efforts to safeguard the safety of the food we eat and minimise the global burden of foodborne illnesses.
