Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, RS Pura today conducted a one day workshop  on  ‘Veterinary practices and updates’ for field veterinarians and post-graduate students.The event, held under the aegis of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’ was aimed at to update the knowledge of participants on various recent dimensions of veterinary practices.  Prof. J.P Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, SKUAST-Jammu inaugurated the workshop as the Chief Guest in presence of Dr. Doifode Sagar Dattatray, Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Jammu and Shri Krishan Lal, JKAS, Director, Sheep Husbandry Department, Jammu, who were Guest of Honors during the function.Prof. Sharma, in his address, said that field vets and other responsible stakeholders related to agriculture and allied sectors should work for meeting the needs and aspirations of the farming community and our research & development works should also focus on the same. He advocated for holding similar kinds of workshops and brainstorming sessions of 2-3 days on different topics of animal husbandry. He also said that the strength of the Jammu region has to be capitalized for uplifting the socio-economic conditions of the people. He informed the gathering that Jammu district has been selected for dairy development under one district one product scheme. He further stressed that it is high time that one has to focus more on processing, value addition and marketing, rather than just production of the commodity. 

Labelling, packaging and certifications of agriculture and livestock products are the other areas, where a lot of efforts are required.Director, Animal Husbandry Department, Jammu, in his address said that animal husbandry is the sector which can fulfil Prime Minister’s ambitious mission of doubling the farmers’ income and the department of Animal Husbandry, Jammu has the capability to do so. He talked about present and future trends in veterinary practices as well as dynamic socio-economic conditions in the society. Director, Animal Husbandry also emphasizes on different livestock schemes being run by the department and how these schemes can enhance farmers ‘income.He also batted for organic way of livestock rearing and suggested the need for incorporation of indigenous technical knowledge, homeopathy, unani and ayurveda in the treatment of livestock ailments along with conventional modern allopathic practices to reduce the problem of antimicrobial resistance, which will be  good for health and wellness of  both human and animals.At the outset, Dr. Rajesh Katoch, Dean Students Welfare cum Course Director, SKUAST-Jammu welcomed the dignitaries and participants of the workshop, while Dr. M.S. Bhadwal, Dean, F.V.Sc & A.H, apprised the gathering about the details of the workshop. He elaborated the problems faced by the farmers in their routine livestock rearing practices and asked the experts to update the field vets on the concerned topics and areas.The workshop was organized jointly by the Division of Veterinary Parasitology and Veterinary Surgery & Radiology of F.V.Sc & A.H.

The workshop was aimed at updating the knowledge of field veterinarians of the Sheep & Animal Husbandry department and adopt a collaborative approach in the field of veterinary research & field practices through interactions with field veterinarians, pharmaceutical companies and scientists so as to develop common strategies and approaches against animal diseases and their control. Dr. Gaurav Chaudhary, Technical Executive of Vibrac Animal Health India Pvt. Ltd. presented a lecture on therapeutic uses of veterinary pharmaceutical products.   Lectures on other different topics were delivered by experts, namely Prof. Rajesh Katoch, Prof. H. R.Bhardwaj and Prof. Pankaj Goswmai.

Prof. H.R. Bhardwaj (Course Director), Dr. Ankur Sharma (Course Co-ordinator), Sr. Scientist, KVK, Jammu, faculty members, post graduate students, committee members attended the workshop. All the participants were given Certificate of Participation. Dr. Sanku Borkataki, Assistant Professor cum Course Coordinator, Division of Veterinary Parasitology thanked all the dignitaries, participants, committee members and specially sponsor of the workshop  Vibrac Animal Health India Pvt. Ltd’ for smooth conductance of the event.
