In its ongoing drive to curb the menace of drugs from this border district, Mansa police today arrested an opium smuggler with 3 kg opium. 

Divulging more details about the drive against drugs, Mansa SSP Mandhir Singh said that the accused has been identified as Gurlal Singh (50), a resident of Danewala village falling under Jhunir police station of Mansa.A case under sections (FIR No-153) 18/25/61/85 of the NDPS Act has been registered against Gurlal. The accused was intercepted by a police party-headed by ASI Balwinder Singh from CIA-- near Jhunir while the accused was carrying contraband in a Tata Indica (Silver Colour), with registration number of Delhi. He was driving the car on Jhunir-Danewal village. The opium smuggler was then taken to Jhunir police station where during preliminary investigation it was found that he had purchased opium from some other person from Madhya Pradesh. SP (D) Mr. Anil Kumar stated that the accused admitted to have purchased the opium in lieu of Rs 3.90 lakh—Rs 1.30 lakh per kg. After buying from the opium from an unidentified person from MP, he planned to sell the same for Rs 2 lakh per kg. The accused also admitted to have been into this illegal trade for the past around 2-3 months. 

Efforts initiated by the Mansa police against drugs this month:

Mansa SSP Mandhir Singh stated that so far 13 persons are arrested under different cases of the NDPS Act in district and the police have recovered 57 kg poppy husk in different cases. Similarly 67 persons are arrested under the Excise Act from whom 2 running liquor bhattis', 530 liter laahan, 429 boxes of liquor is recovered.
