The Irrigation sector of Punjab would soon witness a major boost with the sanctioning of 2 prestigious projects for irrigation from siphons of Kandi Canal Stage-1 and bist doab canal. This would bring the additional 1,74,952 hectares area of the state under irrigation. These projects would accrue the cost of Rs. 625.31 crores.Disclosing this, Irrigation Minister, Punjab, S. Sharanjit Singh Dhillon said that due to the untiring efforts made by the Chief Minister, Punjab, S. Parkash Singh Badal the Union Water Resources Ministry has accorded sanctions to these aforementioned projects under ‘Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchai Yojna’ so that the farmers of Punjab are provided with the best of irrigation facilities.Giving details, he also said that the central government has accorded approval to the Rs. 551.87 crore project of irrigation through underground pipelines from siphons of bist doab canal. 

He further informed that from amongst the area coming under this canal, 20000 hectares of area is already getting the facility of canal irrigation and now with the sanctioning of this project another 1,55,085 hectares area falling in Jalandhar, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr), Kapurthala and Hoshiarpur districts would be brought under top notch irrigation facilities.The Irrigation Minister also said that the Union Government has also given green light to Rs. 73.44 crore project of irrigation through underground pipelines from siphons of Kandi Canal Stage-1. He further elaborated that with the approval to this project 19,867 hectare barani area of District Hoshiarpur would have access to exceptional irrigational facilities.The Minister also said that the Punjab Government is working day and night to ensure the well being of the farming community. He also informed that the project of concretising earthern canal channels and installing deep tubewells is continuing on war footing by the Punjab Water Resources Management and Development Corporation Limited.
