As part of the Independence Day celebrations, Department of Information and Public Relations in collaboration with the Government College for Women, Gandhi Nagar organized a cultural programme here today.Speaker Legislative Assembly, Mr. Kavinder Gupta was the chief guest on the occasion while Minister of State for Culture, Education and Tourism, Mrs. Priya Sethi was the guest of honour.While addressing the participants, Mr. Kavinder Gupta said that Independence Day reminds us of the sacrifices made by our great leaders and freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for our freedom and said that we all should value our hard earned Independence and stand together to uphold the sovereignty of our nation. He said this day calls for serious introspection  on part of everyone to ponder what we are doing for our motherland. “Patriotism is a feeling of pride in our identity, a sense of responsibility towards our people and nation”, stressed Mr. Gupta ."Any small step that brings about certain positive change  is a catalyst that will transform into big revolution", said Mr Kavinder  and exhorted upon the youth to be the harbinger of this change and a new India .Reciting the couplets from a poem of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpai, Mr. Gupta said that Independence should mean freedom from poverty, social evils and inequality and we all should walk together to take the nation on the path of development and prosperity.He also announced Rs. 5 lakh from his Constituency Development Fund for upgradation of infrastructure in the college.

Mrs. Priya Sethi while congratulating the students on the occasion said that Independence Day celebrations should not be confined to a day or two rather it should be a essence that we carry along every day reminding us of our duties  as  citizens of this country.She said it is important that we not only cherish  but value our  freedom as the story of our Independence is written with the sacrifices of our great freedom fighters .Appreciating the enthusiasm of the girl students, the Minister exhorted upon them to keep the spark of nationalism ignited in their hearts and put in hard toil to bring laurels for the state and the nation. She said that India is a beautiful amalgam of different cultures  religions and beliefs and this gives our country a distinctiveness .She asked the students to pursue new heights but remain connected to their roots. “We should try to repay to our motherland in whatever manner we can and participate in the growth of the nation. She also stressed on the need to promote the local art and culture especially the folk dance forms among youth.While congratulating the Department of Information and Public Relations for organizing a scintillating programme, the Minister said that the department has been acting as a bridge between the government and general masses and it has helped disseminate awareness about  important schemes and programmes of the government.

She also exhorted upon the students to strengthen the initiatives of the government like Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Beti Bachao Beti Padao and various other programmes which envisage a positive change in the society. She also announced Rs.10 lakh from her CDF for upgradation of College auditorium.Earlier in his welcome address, Joint Director Information, Mr. T. R. Sharma highlighted the role of information department in disseminating awareness  about schemes and programmes of the government.Calling the department an interface between the government, general public and media, Mr. Sharma said that the department always strives hard to  fulfill  its entrusted duties with dedication.A scintillating cultural bonanza depicting the rich culture of the state and country was presented by the students from Government College for Women, Parade, Government College for Women Gandhi Nagar, Nagbani School, Model College of Education and Research (MIER) and Heritage School on the occasion. The programme was compared by Mr. Ravi Kant.Among others the programme was attended by SDM South, Sonu Pargal, Deputy Directors Information, Priyanka Bhat, Avleen Kour, Assistant Directors, Mamta Bhagat, Vivek Phonsa, Information Officer, Priyalakshmi, Cultural Officer, Raman Joshi and of the department.
