Over-the-counter sale of acid goes on easily across Kashmir despite a ban by Supreme Court of India in 2014. The recent acid attack in North Kashmir’s Sopore town indicates that sale of acid is easily available over the counter and the seller does not bother to maintain a log containing the details of the person to whom it is sold and the quantity sold. After the Nowshera Srinagar acid attack on a female student in December 2014, unidentified persons Monday disfigured the face of a teenager when they sprinkled acid on his face in Sopore town. While identifying the victim as class 9th student Naveed Nazir Sofi, a police official told CNS that Naveed was walking back to his home in Arampora area after offering Taravih prayers when the incident happened. “The attackers fled after sprinkling acid on his face near Lalbab Sahib Masjid Sharif at around 10:30 pm,” said the official.“We have lodged a case and efforts are on to nab the attackers. Police is on toes to nab the culprits. We have been leaving no stone unturned to get these culprits arrested and we assure family that they would be nabbed soon,” he said.Another police officer said that few acid sellers were called to police station for questioning. “We are collecting all the details about the persons who procured acid from these sellers in recent past,” he said and added that the culprits will get arrested in a short span of time.
