Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare, dignity and security of senior citizens, the Punjab Government has taken significant steps to strengthen institutional support and care services for the elderly across the State. Under the leadership of Chief Minister S. Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Government is working continuously to ensure that every senior citizen is able to lead a life of dignity, safety and respect.
Sharing this information, Social Security, Women and Child Development Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur said that senior citizens are the foundation of families, the custodians of society’s wisdom and an invaluable part of our collective heritage. She emphasized that the Punjab Government is committed to ensuring that no elderly person feels neglected, isolated or unsupported.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said, “Those parents and senior citizens who devoted their entire lives to nurturing families and serving society deserve dignity, security and support in their old age. Ensuring their well-being is our collective responsibility.” The Cabinet Minister informed that a grant of Rs. 4.10 crore has been released during the financial year 2025-26 for the smooth functioning of 15 old age homes being run by Non-Governmental Organisations with the support of the Government.
The financial assistance will help improve residential facilities, nutritious meals, healthcare services and other essential amenities for elderly residents. Dr. Baljit Kaur further stated that the Government has registered 26 old age homes across the State to ensure quality care, protection and support for senior citizens.
These institutions are playing an important role in providing a safe, secure and dignified environment to elderly persons in need. Highlighting the Government’s zero-tolerance approach towards elder abuse, neglect and exploitation, the Minister urged citizens to report such incidents through the Elder Helpline 14567.
She said that complaints received through the helpline are addressed promptly and on a priority basis to safeguard the rights and well-being of senior citizens. The Cabinet Minister said that the true progress of a society is reflected in the respect, care and security it provides to its elderly population.
She reiterated that the Punjab Government remains fully committed to protecting the dignity and welfare of senior citizens and will continue to take every possible step to strengthen support systems for them.
