The Punjab Government is making large-scale efforts to protect the state from floods and to ensure the safety of life and property of the people. Under this initiative, a special project costing approximately Rs 12.42 crore has been undertaken to strengthen the banks of the Ghaggar River. Cabinet Minister Barinder Kumar Goyal reviewed the ongoing works in this regard at Makraur Sahib.
He informed that, under this project, the riverbanks near the bridge at village Andana will be strengthened with stone pitching at a cost of Rs 01.83 crore. In addition, strengthening work is being carried out from Makraur Sahib to Karail at a cost of Rs 6.46 crore, and from Khanauri to Makraur Sahib at a cost of Rs 4.13 crore.
Overall, under these projects, about 42 kilometres of riverbanks will be further strengthened and elevated. The Cabinet Minister stated that, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government has already spent approximately Rs 04 crore on strengthening the Ghaggar River banks.
He added that these efforts proved effective during the heavy floods of 2025, when the river flowed above the danger mark continuously for about 10 days, yet major losses in the area were successfully prevented. Goyal said that the primary objective of the government is to protect people from natural disasters and safeguard farmers’ crops.
He emphasized that strengthening the Ghaggar River banks will not only reduce the risk of floods but will also strengthen agriculture in the region. He further assured that the Punjab Government will continue to prioritize such development works in the future and remains committed to the safety and welfare of the people.
On this occasion, the Cabinet Minister also stated that the land of district Sangrur is the land of warriors, fighters, and martyrs, and any derogatory remarks against this land will not be tolerated. Responding to a media query, he said that due to the efficient use of canal water by the Punjab Government, dependence on groundwater has decreased, which will help improve groundwater levels in the state.
On this occasion, SDM Rakesh Prakash, XEN Boota Singh, Sheeshpal Anand (Chairman, Market Committee Lehra), Mahinder Singh Kodni (Chairman, Market Committee Moonak), Rinku Kodni, Jonny Arora (President, Nagar Panchayat Moonak), Nachhatar Rao (MC), Babbu Singla, Mithu Saini (Moonak), Man Singh Handa, Mukand Saini, Sukhi Rampura, Bhim Geer (Makraur Sahib), Madan Singh (Makraur Sahib), Prem Kohli (Makraur Sahib), along with a large number of villagers, were present.
