The Punjab Government today kick started a special scheme to provide free cycles to the children of construction workers. Children of all those labourers who are registered with the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board would be eligible to avail this benefit. This scheme is different from the one launched by Social Security, Women and Child Development Department.Disclosing this here today Mr. Chuni Lal Bhagat, Labour Welfare Minister, Punjab said that this scheme covers only the registered labourers’ children, both boys and girls, who are studying from class 9th to 12th who have also been awarded scholarships from the Board. However, these cycles are a onetime benefit which can be availed only once throughout the four years of study.

He further said that the workers would only become beneficiaries if they have been registered labourers with the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board for a minimum duration of one year and has been regularly paying the membership fees of the Board during the same.Mr. Bhagat appealed to labourers across Punjab to register with the Punjab Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board to benefit from the multiple welfare schemes launched by the Punjab Government. He added that the process of becoming a beneficiary of this scheme has been simplified and does not involve getting approval from Sub pision Level or Deputy Commissioner but just one from the Assistant Labour Commissioner.
