Extension of Airport road to be completed by 2021

The foundation stone of work of extension of 200-feet wide PR 7 road commonly known as the Airport road was laid today by Sarvjit Singh, IAS, Principal Secretary, Department of Housing & Urban Development, Punjab. Mr. Singh laid the foundation stone of the project on behalf of Sh. Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria, Housing & Urban Development Minster, as the latter could not make to the venue because of being engaged in the ongoing assembly session.The road extension would start from the dividing road of Sector 120/125 (NH 5), Sunny Enclave and would connect to PR-4 road at New Chandigarh. The work of construction of road had been allotted at a cost of Rs. 121 crores and the scope of work includes provision of public health, civil and electrical services. The construction work would be completed by the end of next year.Construction of 8.8 km (8 lanes) road stretch includes provision of a road culvert, one high level bridge, laying of storm water drainage and installation of street lights. Construction of this portion of the PR 7 road would provide direct connectivity to New Chandigarh town from the International Airport, Mohali and would ease out the traffic congestion in Chandigarh, as the travelers bound to New Chandigarh would take a direct route from the airport and would need not to enter Chandigarh. The road extension would reduce the distance between Mohali and New Chandigarh and is expected to save 15-20 minutes of travelling time between the two towns.Construction of this stretch of the road would also provide direct access to the towns of Ropar and Baddi in Himachal Pardesh to the travelers coming from Ambala and Delhi who would no longer be required to go to Chandigarh and would take the direct road from Zirakpur to reach these cities. The road which would pass through villages Saini Majra, Thaska, Hasanpur and Palheri is expected to lead to development of these areas.Prominent among those present during the foundation stone laying ceremony were Mr. Pradeep Kumar Agrawal, IAS, Chief Administrator, GMADA, Mr. Devinder Singh, Chief Engineer, GMADA and other officers.
