The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) today said it was strange that the supposed champion of the Dalits - Charanjit Singh Channi was passing the buck instead of giving relief to Dalit students who were being denied admission into ITIs in the State. In a statement here, former minister and SAD spokesman Maheshinder Singh Grewal said Technical Education minister Charanjit Channi was fond of doing politics in the name of Dalits when in opposition. He said now however Channi seemed to be averse to the plight of scheduled caste students who were being denied admission in ITIs because the government had not reimbursed them for providing free education to Dalit students. The Akali leader reminded Channi that he was not only part of the government but also Technical Education minister. "ITI institutions are openly stating they will not admit Dalit students and you have not done anything. Similarly you have not taken any effort to get the dues of ITI institutions with regard to fee of Dalit students reimbursed to them. "This is your duty as a minister. How can you run away from this duty and make excuses for not reimbursing the fee?" he asked.Asking him not to do any drama and start delivering, Mr Grewal said if Channi was unable to direct ITI institutions to admit SC students without charging them any fee he should quit immediately.
