Militants may try to attack Amarnath Yatra : Army

Army Wednesday claimed that they are reports which suggest militants may try to attack annual Amarnath Yatra which commenced today from Jammu.G-O-C Chinar Corps, Lt Genel J.S. Sandhu while talking to media persons in Uri area of Baramulla district after inaugurating a bridge said that Hurriyat Chairman Syed Ali Shah Geelani has said that there will be no threat to Amarnath yatra. “But we are getting reports that the militants may try to attack the yatra. We have deployed our forces and all efforts would be made to protect yatris so that yatra ensues peacefully and safely,” he said, adding that two battalions of army have been deployed for security of yatra.The Army commander while commenting on protest calendar that was announced by UJC chief and Supreme Commander of Hizbul Mujahideen Syed Salahuddin couple of days ago to commemorate the anniversary of Burhan Wani said that “it shows the cooperation between the militants and Hurriyat”.“Normally the UJC and Hurriyat work together. Usually the Hurriyat used to issues protest calendars and this time UJC has issued it. It seems there liaison is good,” he said. In reply to a question about the ongoing search and cordon operations in Srinagar, the Corps Commander said that these operations are carried out after forces receive information about militants.“The police and CRPF mainly handle situation in Srinagar. As we get information about the militants, we launch operations against them. It is a normal pattern of operations. They (police and CRPF) might have got any information and that’s why the operations were launched,” he said.(GNS)
