Chief Secretary, B R Sharma Tuesday chaired the 2nd meeting of the State Level Advisory Committee (SLAC), constituted to monitor the construction of permanent campus of National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) at Ompora Budgam.State Government has designated Industries and Commerce Department as nodal department for the Project and nominated SIDCO as the implementing agency for executing the Project.NIFT Srinagar started functioning in the year 2013-14 from a rented accommodation at Craft Development Institute Srinagar and later shifted to its temporary campus at SIDCO Electronic Complex at Rangreth Srinagar.In 2016-17, two degree courses were sanctioned viz Bachelor in Fashion Design and Bachelor in Fashion Communication.Due to disturbance in 2016 and lack of hostel facilities, classes could not commence at Srinagar and the Students were shifted to NIFT Jodhpur. The 2nd Semester will end in May 2017, after which students will shift to Srinagar Campus in July for start of 3rd Semester, while the process for Admission of new batch is in process.While reviewing the progress in regard to the start of construction work of permanent NIFT campus at Ompora, Budgam, Chief Secretary stressed on taking the work forward expeditiously and emphasized defining clear timelines so that project is completed timely.Detailed deliberations were also held by the SLAC regarding arrangements for providing residential accommodation and other facilities for NIFT faculty and students in Srinagar.
