West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday publicly lashed out at the privately run Medica Superspecialty Hospital here for its alleged role in kidney racket, ordering it to check the practice. The hospital, however, denied the charge."Has the kidney racket stopped at your hospital," she questioned one of the representatives of the hospital during an open meeting of the state government with the managements of city-based private hospitals at the Town Hall."There was no such racket," claimed the official in the presence of a large posse of media persons with some news channels covering the interaction live. But Banerjee persisted."There was a police inquiry. Centre had sent us a document. The matter had gone to court... since there was no law.... you went scot-free."The law has to be drafted in a different way. I know the case," Banerjee then turned to state Director of Health Services B.R. Satpathy and asked him to come up with a new legislation. The Chief Minister also asked city Police Commissioner Rajeev Kumar, who was present at the meeting, to look into the matter."My point is to not let such rackets continue. I do not want any child or kidney racket in the future," she said, overruling the hospital representative who tried to counter her politely.
