Punjab Congress today condemned the honouring of the kin of the assassin of late Prime Minister Ms Indira Gandhi by the Shiromani Gurdwara Prabhandhik Committee (SGPC) in Golden Temple on her death anniversary. “Honouring an assassin at a holy place like Harmandir Sahib is condemnable”, he remarked.Lashing out at the act, Punjab Congress general secretary and Dhuri MLA, Arvind Khanna asked the Shiromani Akali Dal which is controlling the SGPC and its partner the BJP as whether they approved of what the assassins had done by being party to honouring their (the assassins’) kin. Khanna said, the Akali Dal cannot turn a blind eye to what is being done by the SGPC. He pointed out, not only does Akali Dal control the SGPC but it is also in power in Punjab and it is the responsibility of the party to ensure that nothing untoward is allowed to take place anywhere in the state. The Congress general secretary also questioned BJP’s silence on the issue. He said, political affiliations apart, the BJP should come clear on its stand about the honouring of the killers of the Prime Minister of the country. Khanna said, earlier it was the Operation Bluestar memorial, then homage to the General Vaidya’s killers and now honouring Ms Gandhi’s assassins and all this does not portend well for Punjab. “Honouring an assassin and the one who had betrayed the trust of the person he killed is disgusting and condemnable and surprisingly the ruling Akali-BJP alliance partners seem to be tacitly approving of it”, he remarked, while adding, “both the Akalis as well as BJP stood exposed over their stand on terrorism”.
