In District Baramulla, the department of health has been playing a pivotal role in providing Medicare facilities to the patients. During the past some years, the Government has taken several measures to strengthen the health infrastructure according to the needs of the population of the district.The District Hospital, Baramulla having a capacity of three hundred beds caters to the needs of majority of patients of the district and many parts of the north Kashmir. The hospital is equipped with all the latest diagnostic facilities and majority of patients suffering with different ailments are treated there, and only the patients with acute problems/emergencies are being referred to the tertiary healthcare institutions in Srinagar. Besides, the Primary Health Centers / Dispensaries/Sub-Centers are also actively providing services to the patients.During the first five months of the current financial year, as many as 1.92 lakh outdoor and 11,194 indoor patients have been treated in the district hospital. Besides, 2003 major and 3420 minor surgeries, 13415 X-rays, 6080 ECG, 8132 USGs and 1330 CT Scans were conducted. In addition to this, 1716 deliveries were conducted in the hospital during the said period.

Moreover, 167109 laboratory examinations were also done while as 7158 children covered under immunization programme, which includes 5934 children under Ist  and 2nd dose of TT infections during same period. The district hospital also attended 11655 dental cases, which includes 3221 extractions, 893 fillings, 103 RCTs, 1727 x-rays, 3735 zinc oxides and 1976 others.In order to sensitize the people about the causes, symptoms and preventive measures about various serious diseases like cancer, diabetic, heart ailments, water borne diseases, the  awareness camps and workshops are being organized by the department in the hospital and in the periphery with the help of NGOs, ASHA workers. The department also organizes special clinics and operative workshops for cancer patients from time to time and leading consultants give their services. The Directorate of Health Services, Kashmir, recently organized such camp in the district hospital in collaboration with the Department of Surgical Oncology, SKIMS, Soura wherein senior faculties rendered their services voluntarily.
