Nadeem Qadri, Founder of the Nature University, and member of Environmental Policy Group (EPG), during a recent meeting with the Governor N.N. Vohra apprised the latter about the discovery of Triassic Fossils at Khanmoh, which is located about 13 kms away from Srinagar.Mr. Qadri briefed the Governor about his plans topromote an International Kashmir Triassic Fossil Park, as an Open Air University, with educational and recreational facilities, for serving the interests of students, scholars and scientists from all over the world.Mr. Qadri informed that Permian and Triassic formations are stratigraphically located in Kashmir and the massive bio extinction which occurred 252 million years back, in the geological times of Permian Triassic Era, is fully stored in a great rock system at a place called Guryul Ravine at Khanmoh near Pampore.This area also has invaluable fossil wealth. Besides the plant fossil of Gangmopteris, Glossopteris leaves consist of Foraminifera, Byzones, Brachipodes, Conodantes, Bivalve, ammonids, pelecypd, Claria etc. It is perhaps known only to the interested scientists that the first ever recorded Tsunami is well preserved in the layers of these rocks. Geologists from all over the world, specially from USA, UK, Ireland, China, Japan and Scotland, have been visiting this area for furthering their research studies. The rear side of the ridge leads to the Dachigam National Park, which is a protected Wild Life Park for Kashmir Deer, locally known as the Hangul. The Governor congratulated Mr. Qadri’s sustained scientific interest and appreciated his plans to promote the establishment of an internationally important site which would be an asset for students and researchers from all over the world.
