Punjab Congress today lashed out at the opportunistic silence of the Bhartiya Janata Party over the murderous attack on Lt Gen Kuldeep Singh in London on Sunday.“BJP seems to have voluntarily buried its head in the sand to remain oblivious of what is happening around in and outside Punjab, lest it puts its continuance in government at stake”, Punjab Congress general secretary and Dhuri MLA Arvind Khanna said in a statement here today.Ridiculing the ultranationalist claims of the BJP, Punjab Congress general secretary said that the way the party (BJP) had preferred to maintain silence on such an issue of national concern only betrayed its sheer opportunism showing the party was more concerned about staying in government than its cherished policy and principles.Khanna said, it was not for the first time that the BJP had preferred political opportunism to national interest. Earlier also, he pointed out, when the SGPC, duly supported by the Punjab government of which BJP is a part and parcel, decided to set up a memorial to Operation Bluestar, the BJP kept quiet so sheepishly and now it has again done so when a decorated army general who put his life at stake for the national interest was attacked in London. The Congress general secretary asked the BJP that it was high time to clarify its stand on such serious and critical issues which have a direct bearing on the situation in Punjab. “BJP has adopted a classic ostrich like attitude while remaining blind to what is happening around in Punjab either at the hands of its alliance partner or with its approval”, he observed, while warning such an approach will be dangerous.Khanna also criticized the Shiromani Akali Dal for not coming out clearly against the acts of terror and condemning these unambiguously.
