By defeating the BJP-led combine, Bihars electorate has rejected the rightwing economic and political agenda of the Narendra Modi government, the CPI-M said on Tuesday. An editorial in "People's Democracy", the party's mouthpiece, said the 18 months of the Modi government had been marked by "vicious attacks on the livelihood of the people and cuts in social welfare schemes."This rightwing economic and communal agenda is what has been rejected by the people of Bihar."The Grand Alliance led by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar trounced the Bharatiya Janata Party-led alliance in Bihar's assembly elections. The CPI-M editorial said the verdict would have "important ramifications" for national politics.

The CPI-M also said that there was potential for building "a powerful Left and democratic alliance" in Bihar.Six Left parties unitedly fought the elections, and polled nearly four percent of all votes although they did not have much time to campaign. The Communist Party of India-Marxist Leninist or CPI-ML (Liberation) won three seats. "Left unity has shown the potential for building a powerful Left and democratic alliance in the state, provided the Left forces can work unitedly together in the coming days," it said.
