The Punjab Government emphasizing on the need of white revolution, has chalked out a special program to increase the milk production in the state, under which Rs. 93 crores would be incurred during the current session of 2012-13.   Gulzar Singh Ranike, Animal Husbandry, Fishery and Dairy Development Minister Punjab, disclosing this said that the Punjab Government has approved a detailed scheme with a total amount of Rs. 93 lakh for increasing the production of milk including modernization of semen banks at Ropar and Nabha, expansion of area under the cultivation of green fodder, implementation of subsidies on various schemes for the welfare of dairy farmers and on milking machines, import fetus from USA under Fetus Exchange Program to increase the milk production besides improving breeds of milch-cattle.The Minister said that Punjab has placed under National Dairy Plan Phase-1 to enhance the milk yield in the state through semen production, breed examination and fodder production. He said that Punjab has also become the first state in the country, which passed an act to implement ‘Herd Registration Program’ to maintain the record of birth and death of each and every milch-cattle. He said that this program would helpful for the government to control the problem of stray animals and improvement of breed. He said that herd registration program would also prove a boon for making dairy farming a scientific and commercial trade.  Ranike said that Patiala has witnessed a state-of-the-art laboratory for fetus exchange, which would give better results in future. He said that Punjab Government has bought 3 lakh doses of foreign semen from America and Canada for improvement of cows breeds in the state. He also said that with the usage of these doses the cows in the state would give total 12000 liter milk on every delivery. He said that these foreign medicines would be given to the dairy farmers on 50% subsidy. He said that under fetus exchange program 118 fetus has been brought from America for both purposes of improvement in breeds and increase in milk production. He said that the Punjab has witnessed 17.61 lakh cows and 50 lakh buffalos at present, which produces 95.5 lakh tones of milk.
