Minister for Medical Education, Youth Services and Sports, Taj Mohi-ud-Din today inaugurated the Second Annual Sports Meet-2013 at Government Medical College Srinagar here today.The Sports meet saw participation from under graduate and post graduates students of the college besides members of Faculty staff.Addressing the inaugural function, the Minister highlighted the need for extra-curricular activities, besides course curriculum by the students. He said sports should be made an integral part of course curriculum so that the students not only excel academically but also physically and mentally.Mr. Taj said that government has taken several steps for strengthening and upgrading sports infrastructure in the State. He said sports complexes would be constructed at block level and every Panchayat would have a sports field.The Minister said that State Government has submitted a plan for Rs. 1000 crore to the Centre for expanding the infrastructure in the State.
He said facilities and gadgetry at the sport stadia complexes would be further strengthened to make it in line with International norms. The Minister also assured extension of facilities as are available to the college.Earlier, the Minister formally declared the Sport meet open by unfurling the college flag. Welcoming the Minister, Principal GMC Dr. Rafiq Pompori gave a resume of the sports and extracurricular activities undertaken at the college. He said college is soon going to have a gymnasium and Football ground at Bemina.Earlier, Chairman of CASS, Dr. Kaiser Ahmed highlighted the need for holding such Sports meet.Many interesting items were included in the sports meet including Tug of War and Pitcher Race. In the Tug of war event, the faculty in both male and female category defeated the students team.
