Balbir Sidhu Asks Departments To Furnish Report On Cess Collected Under Punjab Building & Other Construction Workers Welfare Act

Balbir Singh Sidhu, Labour Minister today instructed all the department to furnish the report on the cess collected by them under Punjab Building & Other Construction Workers’ Welfare, Act. Instructions in this regard were issued to the concerned department by the labour minister in a high level meeting held at Punjab Bhawan, Chandigarh.Presiding over the meeting, Mr. Sidhu expressed serious concern over the issue that other department usually collect 1 % cess on total cost of construction done under the purview of their departments, but they do not furnish the detail of the cess collected, to the labour department. He said that the cess is meant for the welfare of the construction workers registered with Labour Department. He asked the department to soon furnish report of the cess so that monetary help under various welfare schemes could be disbursed to the construction workers.Mr. Sidhu instructed the Punjab Mandi Board to furnish assessment report of all the ongoing projects in the Mandis of the state. Similarly Local Government Department asked to send the report on the number of maps passed for the construction of new houses in corporation area, so that construction workers’ welfare board could be aware of the present situation of the cess due from the local government department.Balbir Singh Sidhu said that a construction worker has to get himself registered with the Construction Workers’ Welfare Board to avail the benefits under various welfare schemes. He said that a worker must have worked at least 90 days as a construction worker to be registered with the board and has to pay rs.25 as registration fee.Labour Minister issued instructions for the representatives of Financial Commissioner, Rural Development & Panchayats, Punjab, Principal Secretary, Local Government Department, Punjab, Secretary, Water Supply & Sanitation Department, Secretary, Punjab Mandi Board to remain present in the meeting to be on October, 29, 2018, with the detailed report.
