Srinagar , 28 May 2018

Srinagar family whose loved one was crushed to death by a police vehicle Monday staged a protest demanding stringent punishment for the accused driver. The 18 year old youth was crushed to death by a police armoured vehicle in downtown Srinagar amid protests following a firefight between militants and government forces on May 5, a video clip that went viral over social media showed. The police first said Adil died in a “traffic accident”, but following the video clip they issued a statement saying legal proceedings had been initiated against the driver of the police vehicle that crushed the youth to death.Police had formally registered a case against the erring driver while court granted him bail a couple of days ago.  The protesting family members who assembled here in Press Enclave Srinagar said that police have gone soft on the accused cop. Police have not booked the accused driver under relevant sections and further it defended him in the court of law.

“The offence mentioned in FIR are rash driving (279 RPC), causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others (337 RPC). There is no mention of causing death by negligence (304-A RPC),” they said.“First of all, police didn’t reveal the identity of the accused cop. He killed my beloved son and for that crime he should have been hanged. Police even didn’t produce him in the court of law and yet he got bail,” said the mother of the deceased youth to news agency CNS.“Neither police have been showing the accused driver to us, nor they presented him before the court,” the family members said. They said they will continue to stage protest outside police station Safakadal, till the accused driver is not formally arrested and booked. “The driver was not arrested even for a single day as was claimed by police. Book the driver formally,” the parents said. (CNS)
