The failure of administration to arrange a garbage dumping facility in Ganderbal town has evoked widespread resentment among the locals as heaps of domestic and commercial waste is lying scattered across the town.Aghast locals said that the town has turned into a garbage dump with heaps of garbage present on the roadside in many areas including the main market due to the non-availability of any proper garbage dumping site.According to locals, the garbage being collected by municipal committee Ganderbal (MCG) from various areas is being dumped along the main highway near Beehama here that emanates foul smell making the pedestrian movement difficult. One of the local Farooq Ahmad told PTK, “Dogs are always seen in many areas as they keep searching for food in these dumps, posing a threat to locals particularly students,” said a local resident, adding that the garbage heaps have also become breeding grounds for insects.

The authorities have turned a blind eye toward this issue. Many a time authorities do not lift garbage from the place even in the evenings,” they said. “The garbage emanates foul smell and has become a health hazard for the people. It also attracts dogs, cattle and insects,” a commuter said.“The problems get compounded with increase in temperature,” a shopkeeper said. Officials said that there is no land available where garbage from the town could be dumped. While talking to Press Trust of Kashmir, Executive Officer Municipal Committee Ganderbal, Wali Mohammad, told that they have identify the land for a dumping site in Ganderbal. He said that after dumping the garbage at a particular place in Ganderbal they lift it every day for its disposal near area of Ganderbal. He further added that if there is anywhere garbage on road they will try to clear that within no time.
