The Sehajdhari Sikh Party (SSP) has extended unconditional support to the Congress for the Punjab assembly polls. In a letter to the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, SSP national president Dr Paramjeet Singh Ranu said the national council of the party had unanimously decided to fully support Congress in the assembly elections, just as it had been doing since the 2002 polls.Dr. Ranu said there were about 70 lakh Sehajdhari Sikhs in Punjab who strongly felt that they had been deprived of their rights and their problems had been neglected by the ruling SAD-BJP combine. He charged the Akali and BJP with dividing the minority by passing certain communally divisive Bills and Acts in Parliament. "We henceforth feel secure only under the secular face of Congress party," he stated in his letter.
