Four members of a family, including two sisters and two young children, died in a road accident on the Durg‑Raipur National Highway‑53 in Chhattisgarh on Thursday. Police said five members of the family were travelling on a scooter from Somni in Bhilai‑3 to their maternal uncle’s house in Vasant Vihar, Raipur, when the vehicle rammed into the rear of a stationary tractor loaded with oxygen cylinders.

The deceased were identified as Amrita Nirmalkar (28), her sister Lakshmi Nirmalkar (26), and Amrita’s daughters Yachna (7) and Dali (4). Amrita’s eight‑year‑old son Bhavesh sustained serious injuries and is undergoing treatment at AIIMS Raipur.

The accident occurred under the jurisdiction of the Kumhari police station. The impact was so severe that the two women and two girls died on the spot. Amrita’s husband, Lokesh Nirmalkar, told police the family had celebrated Yachna’s birthday just two days earlier, on July 14.

He described the loss as devastating, noting that his wife, daughter, son, and sister‑in‑law were all on the scooter at the time of the crash. While Amrita and Yachna died instantly, Bhavesh is currently in the ICU at AIIMS Raipur. Police have seized the tractor and detained its driver, Bhola Yadav, for questioning.

The bodies have been sent to the Supela mortuary for post‑mortem examinations. Authorities are investigating whether the parked tractor was properly indicated or if other factors contributed to the tragedy.
