A delegation of the Resident Welfare Association (RWA), New Sunny Enclave, the 142-acre Mega Housing Project in Sector-125, Kharar, led by BJP Punjab State Media Head Vineet Joshi, met SDM-cum-Administrator, Municipal Council Kharar, Gurmit Singh, at his office on Wednesday and submitted a memorandum highlighting the severe drinking water crisis being faced by thousands of residents.
The delegation led by Vineet Joshi comprised RWA President Sardar Pavittar Pal Singh, Ram Krishna Kataria, Sardar Harmel Singh, Captain Inderjit Singh, Tirlok Singh Sokhi, Sewak Singh (Ex-PCS), Sudesh Kumar Dhuna, Dr. Shashi, and Jagga Singh Chauhan.
Joshi informed the SDM that despite the colony being one of Punjab's largest approved housing projects, residents have been facing an acute shortage of drinking water for several years. He said the colony was initially provided with only two tubewells in 2009 when the population was much smaller. Over the years, the population has increased manifold, but the water infrastructure has remained unchanged, resulting in an inadequate and erratic water supply.
The delegation pointed out that one of the existing motors frequently breaks down and, in the absence of a standby motor, residents are left without water for days. They also expressed concern over the deteriorating quality of drinking water, stating that it often contains excessive suspended particles, posing a serious health risk to residents.
Joshi stated that despite repeated representations to various departments, public representatives, ministers and government authorities over the past several years, no permanent solution has been provided. He urged the SDM to ensure the immediate installation of the three tubewells that have already been approved by the government so that residents receive an uninterrupted supply of safe drinking water.
The delegation also demanded that the government expedite the takeover of the colony's civic infrastructure and ensure its proper maintenance, as residents are regularly paying taxes but continue to suffer due to poor basic amenities.
They warned that if the long-pending issue remains unresolved, residents may be left with no option but to launch a peaceful democratic agitation to secure their basic right to drinking water. The SDM assured the delegation that the matter would be examined on priority and appropriate steps would be taken in coordination with the concerned departments to address the grievances of the residents.
