In a significant initiative aimed at promoting the mental well-being of inmates and undertrials, the District Administration Barnala, through the District Red Cross Society, has launched "Radio Station Ujala" at the District Jail, Barnala. The facility was inaugurated today by District and Sessions Judge Ms. Anshul Berry and Deputy Commissioner Harpreet Singh, IAS.
Deputy Commissioner and President of the District Red Cross Society, Barnala Harpreet Singh said that the radio station has been established at a cost of approximately Rs. 3.5 lakh with the support of the District Red Cross Society. Designed as a platform for recreation, learning and self-expression, the initiative seeks to create a more positive and engaging environment within the jail.
He said speakers have been installed in every barrack and common area, enabling inmates and undertrial prisoners to listen to music, inspirational messages and informative programmes throughout the day. Beyond entertainment, the radio station will also provide inmates with an opportunity to showcase their talent by reciting poetry, sharing motivational thoughts, singing songs and even hosting programmes as Radio Jockey (RJ).
The Deputy Commissioner said the station will regularly broadcast motivational talks, music, health and legal awareness programmes, educational content and other informative features aimed at supporting the personal growth and emotional well-being of inmates. He emphasized that the objective of "Ujala – Voice of Positivity" is to encourage positive thinking, reduce stress, build confidence and prepare inmates for a meaningful return to society.
Calling it more than just a radio station, Harpreet Singh said, "'Ujala – Voice of Positivity' is a symbol of hope, encouragement and new beginnings. It is an important step towards fostering a positive mindset and supporting the rehabilitation of inmates by giving them a platform to express themselves and reconnect with society."
