Punjab Engineering College (Deemed to be University) successfully organised a series of expert talks on “Additive Manufacturing of Implants and Prosthetics” and “Analytics of AI-Integrated Biomedical Sensor Devices” under the aegis of the DST–PURSE programme, supported by the Department of Science and Technology.

The sessions brought together eminent experts Dr. Vishal Gupta from Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology and Mr. Arshdeep Bahga, Founder of Cloudemy Labs, Chandigarh. The event was graced by the DST–PURSE Principal Investigator Prof. Vasundhara Singh, along with Co-Principal Investigators Prof. R. S. Walia and Prof. Sandeep Kumar. The programme was ably coordinated by Dr. Poonam Saini and Dr. Shilpi Chaudhary.

In his expert lecture, Dr. Vishal Gupta delivered in-depth insights into Additive Manufacturing of Implants and Prosthetics, elaborating on implant design, bone fractures and their classifications, fracture healing duration, bone drills and screws, and the role of Additive Manufacturing Technology (AMT). He further discussed the transition from CAD to STL, mechanical and fluid mechanics aspects of 3D printing, material degradation, and the importance of infill patterns for error reduction.

Real-world applications of 3D printing in biomedical devices such as heart models, womb structures, braces, knee caps, and other prosthetics were also highlighted. The subsequent session by Mr. Arshdeep Bahga focused on Analytics of AI-Integrated Biomedical Sensor Devices. Beginning with heart anatomy and physiology, he explained the heart’s function as a biological pump and detailed cardiac action potential, sinoatrial nodes as natural pacemakers, ECG waves—particularly R-waves—heart rate variability (HRV), and the role of the autonomic nervous system, including sympathetic and parasympathetic balance, in biomedical analytics.

Notably, Punjab Engineering College has been honoured with the prestigious DST–PURSE grant of ₹7.5 crore, significantly strengthening its research ecosystem by promoting high-impact, collaborative research initiatives. The workshop concluded with vibrant discussions and enthusiastic participation from faculty and students, reaffirming PEC’s commitment to fostering industry–academia collaboration and advancing research in sustainable and next-generation technologies.
