A meeting of the District Road Safety Committee was held today under the chairmanship of Sh. Nishant Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner, Chandigarh. The meeting was attended by the SSP (Traffic), SDMs, and representatives of the Engineering Department, Health Department, Architecture Department, and NHAI.

The Deputy Commissioner expressed satisfaction over the speed-calming measures implemented by the concerned departments and the updation of road signage as per national guidelines. He further directed the Engineering Department to expedite and complete the work related to the raising of kerbs along various roads within the stipulated timeframe.

The Engineering Department was also directed to remark zebra crossings at various light points and to ensure urgent pruning of trees along road stretches to improve visibility and overall road safety. The DC instructed the SDM (Central) to conduct a special anti-encroachment drive on the road stretch from PEC to Khudda Alisher and from PGI to Khudda Lahora to remove unauthorised vendors.

He further directed that Civil Defence Volunteers be strategically deployed at specific locations along these routes to:

• Prevent re-emergence of unauthorised vendors,

• Assist in regulating pedestrian and vehicular movement during peak hours,

• Support traffic police in managing bottlenecks,

• Provide on-ground coordination during enforcement and road safety activities.

This deployment will ensure that unauthorised vendors do not return and cause traffic hurdles and will help in maintaining smooth and uninterrupted traffic flow. Regarding the construction of the Traffic Police Assistance Booth, the DC directed that the work be completed by the end of December.

The Deputy Commissioner also instructed the representative of the Health Department to ensure early implementation of EDAR (Emergency Device for Accident Response). He emphasized that this system will facilitate faster emergency medical response, timely evacuation of injured persons, improved coordination between hospitals, ambulances, and enforcement agencies, and provision of free-of-cost treatment to accident victims.

He stressed that the system should be operationalised at the earliest to strengthen Chandigarh’s road safety ecosystem.
