In a significant step towards strengthening community-driven environmental management, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC), Dr. Devansh Yadav, conducted a detailed inspection of Ward No. 50 today. During the visit, he interacted with residents and held an awareness meeting with members of the Evergreen Park Association of Channi Himmat Sector 7, encouraging them to play an active role in the Green Colony Initiative.
Dr. Yadav informed the gathering that the Green Colony Initiative—a model programme introduced by JMC—was implemented for the first time in Sainik Colony, where citizens enthusiastically participated in adopting eco-friendly practices. He said that the initiative has shown positive results, inspiring cleaner surroundings, better waste management and increased community involvement.
The Commissioner urged the residents of Channi Himmat to adopt the initiative with the same spirit and enthusiasm, highlighting that if they agree to take it forward, Channi Himmat can become the second fully-developed Green Colony in Jammu. This would not only improve the immediate environment but also set an example for other localities in the city to follow.
Emphasizing the need for behavioural change at the household level, Dr. Yadav appealed to residents to stop the use of single-use plastic bags and instead shift to cloth and paper bags, which are more sustainable and environment-friendly. He stressed that public cooperation is the backbone of any environmental movement and only through people’s support can the city achieve noticeable progress in waste management.
Speaking about waste generation in residential colonies, he advised that garden waste and dry leaves collected from parks and compounds should be composted on-site. He explained that composting helps reduce the burden on the municipal waste system and simultaneously produces natural manure that can be used for gardens and green spaces within the community.
Underscoring the necessity of segregating wet and dry waste at the household level, Dr. Yadav stated that waste segregation is the first and most crucial step in effective waste disposal. Segregation helps in preventing littering, keeping surroundings clean and ensuring proper recycling and processing of waste.
“If every family takes responsibility for maintaining cleanliness within their homes and the surrounding areas, we can collectively transform Jammu into a cleaner and greener city," Dr. Yadav said. He added that cleanliness is not just the responsibility of the government but a shared duty of children, adults, elders and every citizen.
He highlighted that inculcating good waste management habits in children will ensure a cleaner future for the city. During the visit, the Commissioner also took stock of the sanitation services in the locality and issued necessary instructions to the staff for maintaining regular cleanliness and monitoring waste disposal practices.
The meeting witnessed active participation from municipal officials including Health Officer JMC Dr. Vinod Sharma and Chief Transport Officer Zone 2nd, Dharamveer Singh along with the sanitation team. Members of the Evergreen Park Association including Saujanya Sharma, Nalini Kohli, Dr. Liaqat Ali Shah, Madhavi Sharma, Rajesh Gupta and several others were also present and shared their views and suggestions on improving cleanliness in the colony.
