The Government of Punjab and the Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital & Research Centre, Punjab, have officially renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at the hospital's Sangrur premises. This partnership aims to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and services for cancer patients across the state.
In the presence of Dr. Balbir Singh, Health Minister of the Government of Punjab, and Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, Punjab, the extension of the MoU was signed by Shri Madho Singh, Director (Administration) of the Hospital, and Dr. Anil Kumar, Director of Punjab Health System Corporation.
While addressing the gathering, Dr. Balbir Singh expressed his optimism that Punjab would soon become cancer and drug-free. He stated that Punjab would emerge as the number one state in the country in terms of health services. However, he acknowledged that the pursuit of feeding the nation had compromised water and air quality, resulting in life-threatening diseases like cancer.
Despite these challenges, the people of Punjab are resilient and determined to fight against drugs and cancer. Dr. Singh extended his gratitude to Tata for collaborating with the Punjab government in this endeavor. He highlighted the state's progress in healthcare, noting that while people once traveled to other states for medical treatment, Punjab is now a hub for healthcare services, attracting patients from across the country.
The Health Minister further announced that the Punjab government would be launching the Chief Minister Health Insurance Scheme on October 2, providing coverage of up to ₹10 lakh per family, including cancer treatment. The government is also focusing on preventive measures to detect cancer at an early stage.
Additionally, the government plans to recruit 1,000 doctors in the near future to address the shortage of doctors in government hospitals. Dr. Balbir Singh stated, "The Government of Punjab is fully dedicated to the health and well-being of its citizens.
Our partnership with the Tata Memorial Centre is a testament to this commitment." Dr. Ashish Gulia, Director of Homi Bhabha Cancer Hospital and Research Centre, said, "Today, this MoU reenergizes our mission to provide holistic cancer care.
We sincerely want to thank the Government of Punjab and our leadership at Tata Memorial Centre and Department of Atomic Energy for their everlasting support to achieve our mission goals." Under the renewed agreement, the Tata Memorial Centre will be responsible for managing hospital operations, overseeing operational finances, and conducting public health programs, among other responsibilities.
The Government of Punjab will provide financial backing for new medical equipment, infrastructure augmentation, and support for key schemes. This partnership marks a significant milestone in the fight against cancer in Punjab, combining the specialized expertise of the Tata Memorial Centre with the governmental and financial support of the state.
The collaboration is expected to create a seamless and high-quality cancer care ecosystem, making comprehensive treatment more accessible and effective for the people of Punjab. Other officials and important dignitaries present at the event included Shri Sandeep Rishi, IAS Deputy Commissioner, Sangrur, Dr. S.D. Banavali, Director of Academics, TMC, and Shri T Anbumani, Ex-Chief Administrative Officer, TMC.
